Sharing Printers in Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy - HOWTO

One of the nicest features added to Ubuntu Edgy was the ease of sharing printers - I never could get it working in earlier releases.

So here's a simple howto:

Share printer on machine

To share a printer on you LAN go to:
  • System -> Administration -> Printing
  • In print manager click on:
    • Global Settings -> Share Printers
    • You'll need to enter your password and read and understand the warning.

Find a printer's URI

In order to connect to a printer from a networked machine you'll need the URI.

In your browser enter:

This will list all the printers on you machine and if you click on any printer you will get the full URI - eg: http://127.0.0.1:631/printers/DeskJet-930C

From a remote machine you'll need to change the 127.0.0.1 to be the external IP address of the machine or the dns name. Eg:

Use your web browser on the remote machine to check you can view this page before setting up your printer.

Set up printer on Ubuntu

  • System -> Administration -> Printing
  • Select "New Printer"
  • Select "Printer Type": Network -> Cups printer (IPP)
  • Enter the URI for your printer from above.

Set up printer on Windows

  • Control Panel -> Printers
  • Add New Printer
  • Select Network Printer
  • Enter the URI as above

Too easy. Hope it helps.

George's Gravatar Hi Mark,

I bought myself an HL-5240 and while I found adding the printer as a local printer on the computer, I couldn't work out how to add the others via network printers.

Anyway, I have just now added the printer to Ubuntu Edgy computer by copying the ppd file from the Feisty machine. It's good! Manual duplex doesn't seem to be supported but I can live with that as it's not implemented very well under windows either. (Needing to use the document feeder which is good for maybe 50 pages :-(
